Central Coast blinds – Latest Trends

What are the latest trends in blinds on the Central Coast and Sydney?

In 2015, Shutters and Roller blinds seem to be the most popular trend for window coverings on the Central Coast.

Whilst there is a huge variety in the types of Plantation wood, Aluminium, Poly Resin, PVC and Basswood Shutters, they are still are one of your more expensive options (often between $400-$600 a square metre) and quality can vary enormously. Some Shutters are now entering the market made of MDF covered in a thick paint.  They are extremely cheap, but not covered by warranty if you leave the window open and they get wet with rain.

White is by far the most popular colour for Plantation shutters with over 97% purchases for Plantation Shutters being white, or shades of white for the Central Coast area.

See our section on Shutters for your Central Coast home.

Still one of the most popular window furnishings for the Central Coast lifestyle is the Roller Blinds (Holland Blinds). What’s new is the huge variety of colours and fabrics now.

Ranges start from a low maintenance, mould resistant & fire resistant easy care blind fabric, to lavishly textured soft furnishing blind fabrics that compliment any decor.

Trends in colours seem to be either the warmer colours of chocolate browns, nutmegs, creams and soft whites, or the fresh contemporary look of silvers, ice whites and charcoal.

The colour choice of your blinds often depends on your furnishing and floor covering.  You can make your blinds a feature, just like you can make a wall a feature in a room.  Alternatively you can blend the colour of your blinds with your wall colours, and get the feature colours from your furniture or cushions.

Although most people are opting for the bottom rail and chain controls in a complimentary colour, there seems to be a trend towards a silver anodised oval bottom rail on roller blinds, with a stainless steel chain for operating them. (Beware if your windows are near salt air, as these styles of chains may rust!).

It is also possible to get a designer fabric off the shelf, or using your own interior decorators fabrics.  If you choose to use your own decorators fabrics, they can bond the fabric, so it works well as a blind, and with the heat or cold from a window.

Tops tips for fabric selection

What are the top tips on selecting the right fabric/material for my blinds?

  • An option is  to match the colour of the blind with the wall colours (this works if you have more decorative furniture and want the walls & blinds to be neutral)
  • Another option is to make the blinds a featured texture or colour to compliment the other colours within the room. Hues of creams or silvers and whites work well as blind colours.
  • Printed designer blinds are now used as a feature in a bathroom or kitchen. They are often added for that Pop of colour and can be different to the rest of the house.
  • Consider the use of the room.  Do you want total privacy or block out for sleeping?  Do you still want the room to be light or enjoy a view?  Do you have the window open or closed most of the time?  There are blinds to suit all these variations.
  • Consider the direction of the Sun hitting the window. Is the window facing hot afternoon western sun?  Or morning sun?  Does the weather effect the room and make the room uncomfortable?
  • Some blinds & shutters vary in price and quality. For example Holland (Roller) blinds have price categories from 1-9.   You can get a block out fabric in any category, but it will depend on the fabric and quality.
